Red Tailed Boa
Boa constrictor constrictor
The red tailed boa is a large, heavy-bodied snake found throughout South America. They can be found in a wide variety of habitats including tropical rainforests, dry forest, beaches, savannas, mangrove swamps, and more - pretty much the only place you won’t find them is high in the Andes Mountains. Like all boas, the red tailed boa is a constrictor snake, using its large body to squeeze its prey, and is non-venomous.
The female red tailed boas grown much larger than the males - both in length and weight, and can often be more than 10 feet long. While all red tailed boas have similar markings, especially the distinctive coloration on their tails that give them their name, their exact colors and patterns can vary widely across their range. Distinct color forms are often found in specific places - we call these locales. We have several red tailed boas at Iguanaland and you can see how different they are from each other. Don’t miss the Suriname locale red tailed boa - she’s very pink, or Lois Lane, the largest snake at Iguanaland - she’s almost 10 feet long!
